INTRODUCING
Habitant is an interactive installation in which users will be able to interact with their own silhouette. Using Kinect technology and screen projection, the silhouette of the user will appear on the wall. Users will see their their silhouette composited with video footage of various environments. With an increase in the movement detected by the Kinect, the relayed video footage will become more bleak and will reflect the type of influence human activity has had on our environment. The increased movement is symbolic of the increased human activities and demands on the environment.
can nature’s biocapacity meet the demands of human activities?
the impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources.
Our ecological footprint can be determined by the food, shelter, transportation, and goods/services. Below are the number of planet Earth’s needed to support the lifestyle demands of each country:
be a responsible global citizen
Here is a list of resources to help you get involved and learn more about reducing your ecological footprint!

This early rendering of the installation depicts two different projections. The projected image on the ground shows the environment with little human influence. The projected silhouettes on the wall are composited with video footage of the negative impact human activities have had on our planet. The contrasts and duality of the projected images allow users to reflect on their personal impact on the environment and what may need to be done to change it.
This rendering displays the set up of the installation. It acts as the blue print of the installation as the location, materials, and equipment needed are listed.
Get to know us
We are a group of students within the Interactive Media Design program at the University of Washington. We have spent our entire 2015 Spring quarter in researching, developing, and realizing our interactive installation, Habitant.
Kelly Dennehy is passionate about business marketing and video production. He has used his video editing expertise to do free lance work. Working on his motorcycle and shooting on the gun range are just a few of his hobbies. During his time in the interactive media design program he would like to strengthen his skills with using several game design programs, and hopefully work in the gaming industry.
Ryan Gordon is a designer that specializes in web and user experience design. Pulling someone in and holding their attention is where Ryan’s passion lies. When he was younger he enjoyed games like Pokemon, Zelda and Mario along with many other children his age because of the experience these games delivered. Creating thought provoking narratives is something that Ryan is constantly doing. He lives in Bellevue, bikes around 80% of the time and works as a baker at the mall restaurant, Auntie Anne’s.
Max Lehmicke hopes to become an accomplished writer and storyboard designer. Constructing worlds, characters, and narratives that draw the
audience in and capture their imaginations is what he yearns to do. An avid gamer since he was very young, Max also enjoys reading to the point where he has enough books for a small library. His imagination is hindered only by the speed with which he can write and speak, and it often becomes difficult for his physical body to keep up with his mind. Residing in Kirkland, Max hopes to write stories that he can share with everyone, be it through video games or prose.
Anna Nguyen is an aspiring UX/UI designer. She is interested in learning about the intersection of technology, information, and people. Anna enjoys with working youth. She has volunteered with the SEEDArts Creative Arts & Digital Media Academy, and is currently an intern with Northwest Asian Weekly Newspaper’s Summer Youth Leadership Program for high school students. When she isn’t looking for design inspiration on Tumblr and Instagram, Anna can be found hanging out with friends or researching new recipes to try. She enjoys crime-solving tv shows, sudoku puzzles, and chai lattes.
Have any questions? Did you see our installation and have some thoughts you’d like to share? We welcome any and all feedback!
